Stop by if you can, the charity organizations and churches who support the homeless and those in need are putting on a concert in the top of the Metro Station. They also have free soup, free pancakes and hot beverages too! The soup is great.
They have a can for donations but it not necessary but certainly appreciated.

Running Sushi for families with that ONE picky eater
Okay I told you about the Running Sushi is Hellerup last year for my older son's birthday, how it had drummies, fruit, and fries - well, we found one that is even better!
So it is once again my older son's birthday and he wants sushi but the younger one eats NOTHING so what to do? We didn't feel like going up to Hellerup so we went the other way to Amager. They apparently have several running sushi bars (awesome conveyor belt move the sushi around the restaurant and you pick what you want) but we picked the easiest one to get to on public transport - King Ya Running Sushi and Wok, Amagerbrogade 93, 2300 København - 32 55 38 68. I would call for reservations. It is two blocks up from Amager Centre (Amagerbro Metro stop) or at Oresundvej or Tingevej bus stop (Bus 360S or 4A). It is directly in between McDonalds and the Kentucky Fried Chicken.
Awesome! The sushi was fresh and good and they kept a large variety coming by. You could even make requests at the sushi bar. The offerings included chinese dishes too like a fantastic BBQd sparerib, Hot and Sour soup, and steamed pork dumplings, yum. They also had a fabulous flan and a strawberry cake for dessert. Now for the picky eater, not only drummies, a huge variety of fruit including grapes, orange smiles, pineapple and pink grapefruit but they had chicken nuggets and fries that tasted exactly like McDonalds. Doesn't sound like something to brag about but it was. A wonderful family dinner followed by a really cool little birthday present (and lollipops) for my 12 year old son from the pretty girl at the restaurant. Couldn't beat it at a little over 600 DKK for all four of us and the little one actually ate more then his money's worth.

Grey Goose Vodka - I found it
Well my husband likes vodka martinis, not a very Danish thing but there it is :) So every kiosk and super market has vodka but it is not top shelf so I went on a hunt for Grey Goose. For those of you looking for it - SuperBest has it for appr. 365 DKK or there is as corner store in Christianshavn that stocks it too for 305 DKK. Kiosk Insan Bhuyan, Prinsessegade 29, 1422 Kobenhavn K.
I have to say that this is one of my favorite stores - my kids and I go there for "Soda Friday". The closest Coke to American is the one in the glass bottles but it is 24DKK a bottle at the coffee shops, yuck that is an almost $5 little teeny bottle of soda. Well this corner store has it for 3 bottles for 20 DKK. This store is also right across the street from the Church of Our Saviors, the one with the cool 400 step spire and a block from Christiana. So get you soda and get your Vodka and tell them I sent you!

Paddle Boating - Who knew?
Cool restaurant with beach lounge and paddle boats. Go to the train station in Nørreport then head towards the canal. I don't know the address or the name, sorry guys, but it is right across the bridge.
They have a dock set up as a floating beach to lounge on while you eat or just go straight to the paddle boats. The price is right 85 DKK for the three person one or a little more for an hour on the big one.

Guinness World Record Museum and 4 Pack on Stroget
Yes, it's silly but well worth it! I have been avoiding those goofy museums since we got here but Grandma and Grandpa bought us the multiple attraction pass available at their ticket office(s). "Go Grandma!" This is the pass that lets you in Guiness World Record Museum, Mystic Exploritorium (both by Kongens Nytorv) Ripleys Believe it or Not Museum, and the Hans Christian Anderson Museum (by City Hall/Tivoli). You can visit them the same day or one at a time.
Dreading the shear cheesiness, we started at Guiness - and had a great time! Then we followed this by going right next door and putting our tokens in to enter the Exploritorium (Goofy horror museum), all hands on activities. It took up a couple of hours and the kids had a blast and I liked it too. I liked reading the facts, which are all in English, and they liked the many hands on activities in both attractions.
This week, so about a month later, we went to the other end of the Stroget and did Ripleys and HC Anderson. They are next to each other by KFC in City Hall Square. Not as cool as the first two but still fun and the price to do all 4 instead of just one made it worth it. Even better if Grandma and Grandpa pay! Ripleys had a lot of fun info for adults and older kids but not as much hands on as Guiness and the HC Anderson one was full of facts but also stations with cool diplays where they read the whole story to you in your choice of several languages.
Overall, a fun ticket to keep in your pocket and to visit when you run out of ideas.

REAL Lucky Charms have come to Denmark
Yes they have them at the Mega Candy Store in Nørreport right across the square from Tiger. They have always had a generic substitute but now they have the REAL THING!!! Yes they are over $10, they are 79 DKK, but they are delicious.
Don't forget they also have American pancake syrup, Dr. Pepper and Cherry Coke, Pepperidge Farm goldfish crackers, strawberry and grape Jello, and a bunch of other stuff.

Going to Rome - Fantastic Tour Company with Great Prices
We went to Rome for 3 days so we had a lot to see in a short amount of time. We also took and 8 and an 11 year old, so whether it would be fun or not was up in the air :) A friend recommended Through Eternity Tours and trying to save money I debated long and hard about using them but - I did and it was a great decision. Their group tours looked interesting and their prices were really good but if you look closely their private tours are not much more money and with two kids; I wanted to go at our own pace. So I booked a one day 7 hour tour on our first day there. It was fantastic! Even with my youngest. We saw everything and even fit in a leisurely lunch. The next day we took the hop on hop off bus, saw the Capuchin Monk bizarre crypt with the skeletal chandeliers, went to the castle and the ice skating rink and merry-go-round right down the block and still didn't rush to or through anything.
The tour guide was fabulous and knowledgeable and knowing our situation - make sure to describe everything you need and want in your reservation comments - they are listening - she brought along a Rome popup book. It was great.
Also make sure and tell them you come from Denmark because then a lot of the kids tickets are free. Also,NO LINES, YES NO LINES AT THE COLOSSEUM OR THE VATICAN and you get to see things that other people don't, Who knew that if you ask the guards you are allowed to turn the sculpture at the Vatican. Who even knows that it spun around?
Call them, book it, and have a great time.

Tree Climbing Park - Klatreskoven - Great Fun
We took 2 adults and 7 children to climb during the Easter Holiday - what a terrifying good time! Jeg var BANGE!
There is indoor climbing - this appears to need a reservation if you want to be guaranteed a climbing time but he outdoor courses do not. However, if you have a bigger group for the outdoor park, call anyway. They may give you a reservation to assure that they can fit you in. We climbed outdoors, it was a little chilly but the terror warms you right up ;) The hours are 10-6 on weekends and school holidays and it is generally 100 DKK for children and 150 DKK for adults for two hours climbing time. You get instruction on the safety line (one must be attached at all times) and on the safety equipment and off you go to the three courses, soon to be four. The red course does have a height requirements and only 2 of the kids with us could go. Adults too, but you are out of you mind if you thought I was going - however our 10 and 11 year olds climbed right up. There is also a Yellow course that is only 50 DKK and right off the ground for smaller children.
Note that the youngest we took were 8 years old and they had fun but had a little trouble reaching their safety lines to move them around the course so stick close to the shorter children.
So terrifying, YES, and affordable good time, YES! Looks like it would also be great for birthday parties.
It is right off the S Toget at the Enghave station. Leave the station and go left. It deadends about a block down on a bigger street, turn right and then almost immediately left at the grocery store. Go STRAIGHT and you will run into it. Also check out the cool architecture in Enghave it is a really pretty place to walk around - Carlsberg Brewery has some castle like buildings that are awesome. There is also a skateboard park right by the Climbing Park.

Laundry Detergent that doesn't break the Bank
Does everyone know the Netto sells the BioTech laundry detergent super cheap. The regular little 16 load one, in the three varieties, is sold in most stores for 35DKK. Netto almost always has the BIG one, 26 loads, for 39DKK but right now they have the 20 load bottle for 25DKK. They also occasionally have the honey Cheerios if you are looking for them.

Another Awesome Find on the Stroget
Thank you Graciella for showing me this gem of a restaurant - yes it's on the Stroget in Copenhagen, yes it's really good Middle Eastern food, and yes the price is right! It looks small but The Falafel House between the Nørreport end of the Stroget and the Heron Fountain (yes, there are no herons) is really good. They have a great Shawarma, Chicken Shawarma, Kebob platter, hummus and these absolutely weirdly delicious pepperoncini on the counter, try one, yes you must - they are oddly salty and tasty good. And more importantly they have a bathroom!
It looks small but it goes way back and there is plenty of room inside for a large party for lunch.

Kiin Kiin - Molecular Gastronomy in Copenhagen
Wow, that is the first word that comes to mind. I am a devoted food channel viewer and have been fascinated by all the contestants in the cooking competitions that cook using these super cool magic molecular gastronomy techniques but had never had the chance to enjoy the food itself. Well, last night we had the chance to go to Kiin Kiin the Thai restaurant in Nørrebro. It was nothing less then a true adventure.
Very very pricey but very very awesome!
So this adventure started when my husband tried to make an online reservation and to my disappointment texted me to tell me that there were no tables available. Now don't give up, I called them immediately and they said they had a cancellation and would be happy to have us. (If possible tell them that you would like a table in the basement but this is regularly taken by Corporate groups) They asked what time I wanted to arrive which was confusing as I thought we would have to take whatever reservation had cancelled - nope - it is an all night extravaganza so it didn't matter what time we arrived because they had no expectation of us leaving until closing :) I also very casually asked about their VEGETARIAN menu because one of our guests was pregnant, vegetarian (eats fish), and allergic to shellfish. The man on the phone said it was no problem as long as she could eat fish sauce, so okay, reservation made, done done and done.
Well . . . we arrive and it is very nice. They sit us in the main floor lounge and they immediately start bringing us weird and delicious appetizers. One after the other, after the other, after the . . . you get the picture. When the first one arrives the server tells us that one of the four offerings has already been especially prepared for our vegetarian guest. I mentioned this once casually as a question on the phone and from our arrival on she had a special dish for each serving without us having ever mentioned it again.
After finishing our many many appetizers we were shown the nine course menu and taken to our dining table upstairs. Our two gentlemen opted for the wine pairing and us ladies opted for the JUICE PAIRING (when you can't quite figure out what that really sour yet amazing juice tastes like but you just know you know that taste - it is Jolly Ranchers!) Each and every course then had a beverage specially tailored for that dish. I could describe each dish but it would take more room then I have here so suffice it to say that from the deconstructed ice Tom Yum soup through the white chocolate pop rock coconut lollipops it was all very very very good and more importantly a whole lot of fun. Out of nine dishes the last sorbet was our only disappointment.
Following the meal we went back to the main floor for some coffee and tea and surprisingly three or four more desserts arrived while were winding down the evening.
The food is new, exciting and delicious, the service is superb and the price is astronomical so how can you go wrong?

Great Easy Fish Recipe
This is my friend Graciella's recipe and it can be used for any fish, I have personally made it with white fish and Salmon. OK - here it is . . .
Fish - white fish/salmon/chicken
2 - 3 medium potatoes
2 - 3 medium onions
oil of choice
salt
pepper
herbs of choice (dill for salmon works great)
500 ml madlavningflodle (food cooking cream)
Knorr Aroma seasoning if you have it
PreHeat oven to 180
Cut thin potato rings/chips
Put cut potatoes in the microwave for 5 minutes to precook them
Cut thin onion rings and put on bottom of baking pan
Sprinkle onions with oil, then salt and pepper and herb to taste
Layer potatoes on top of onion layer and sprinkle with oil, then salt and pepper and herb to taste
(if you have a bigger family you can put another layer of onions then potatoes on top)
Rinse fish and pat dry
Put fish on top of onions and potatoes (I salt the salmon skin with kosher salt before I put it in)
Sprinkle fish with oil, salt and pepper and herb to taste
If you have it mix a 1/2 tsp of Knorr Aroma in Cream and then pour into pan
Graciella tops with grated mozzarella and she sometimes uses Bechemel sauce with bleu cheese instead of cream
Bake for 35 - 40 minutes
DONE!

Affordable Dining one block off the Strøget
Who knew? One block over and there is a small restaurant called Samos, it is a Greek family style seating restaurant, with great prices and really good food. So if you are just hanging out downtown at lunchtime turn at the little street almost across from the Lego store, go to the end of the block, and make a left. Two of the stores are gaming stores with puzzles, board games, and table top role playing game paraphernalia for games like Warhammer and WarHammer 40K. The third shop, which is right at the corner is all the armor, chain mail, and the cool foam weapons (they use these for the real role playing in the woods). You have to stop in just to see it.

I've mentioned it before but there is a hardware store called Din Isenkræmmer (this translates literally to Iron Monger) in the Amager (pronounced Amarr) Centret shopping mall. They have some of the best prices I have found on household electric goods - crockpots, irons, hotpots, sandwich makers, vacuum cleaners, etc. There is always a brand on sale. Just remember they don't take standard credit cards just cash or debit cards. They also sell all manner of household items such as dishes, wine glasses, cutting boards, measuring cups, mops, buckets, and much much more for good prices. They are certainly worth a visit.
Just take the Metro to Amager Centret. Go in the entrance marked Apotek and it's three or four stores in on the left.There is another real hardware store in the same mall over by Irma that sells lamps, extension cords, and real hardware and their prices aren't bad either. If you want to compare prices there is another household store down by Føtex that sells things at normal Danish prices, the difference is huge!

Bagels, Bagels and More Bagels - An American Lunch in Hellerup
We wandered into Hellerup looking for an affordable (always a challenge) and delicious lunch for two girls on the town. We didn't want to go fancy but we were looking for a treat so we found our way to The Bagel Co. on Strandvejen right across from Running Man Sushi, near the 7-11. What an unexpected treat! I had been there once before but it was just for a quick Chai and I am sorry I didn't go back sooner. Friendly staff, all speak English, American Bagels in a variety of flavors (a very difficult thing to find in Denmark especially if you don't want whole wheat) including PLAIN, sesame, cheddar and jalapeno, everything and more. You can't beat it.
The sandwiches are amazingly affordable, a small is 48 DKK and a large is 52 DKK, the variety is outstanding (pastrami, delicious and fresh salmon, hummus, cheese, tuna, three flavors of cream cheese, etc.) and the vegetables are plentiful and very very fresh. But hold on to your hats - they have fresh squeezed juices and cans of AMERICAN SODA FOR JUST 19 DKK - Dr. Pepper, Cherry Coke, and Root Beer. Nectar of the Gods!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! If that isn't enough there are DILL PICKLES (also impossible to find in Denmark) and French's yellow mustard. You can also buy both the pickles and the mustard there and the mustard is less then it costs at SuperBest so one less errand on my list.
On your way out pick up a bag of day old bagels for somewhere around 25 DKK. So so so so so good. Are you getting the impression that we liked it, because we did. No tables just two counters and high chairs so get there first! Surprised my picky eater with a plain bagel and cream cheese for breakfast this morning, it was like being home. Mom wins :)

Bare Minerals Beauty Products
Yes, ladies, they have them here! They are obscenely expensive but they have a limited selection including the cleansers and moisturizers. They are in a small section in the Magasin store. You can take the Metro, or Bus 1A to Kongens Nytorv. There is an entrance in the Metro so you don't even have to go outside.
A Bubble Bath and a Bag of Knorr
Well, I've already told you how good some of these Knorr bag meals are. Just add the chicken you stashed in the freezer when you found it on sale and presto instant meal! Now I have waited patiently for someone to try the BBQ one but no comments yet so in a desperate attempt to put something on the table instead of running across the street to the shawarma man (that's for tomorrow) - I bit the bullet and bought the bag of Knorrs BBQ.
I wanted the chicken nugget mix to coat a bunch of chicken breasts but apparently you all took me at my word and you bought all the ones that Netto in Hellerup had. But that's alright because I soldiered on. Knorrs BBQ and the chicken thighs that were the only thing for a reasonable amount of money (who eats chicken thighs, I didn't even know they had thighs). It was tasty good, even better then the Paprika or the Yellow Curry. Delicious, tender and good.
I worked very hard opening up that bag, you have to unfold it and everything, so I believe I will study for my Danish exam and retire early and gracefully. Wish me luck, the exam for my Module 1 is on Friday and I am for no good reason freaking out about it.
Oh yes, the bubble bath - don't mix the Knorr in it, I just meant that I deserve one :)
