This page will be dedicated to restaurants and food vendors that I have found in the Copenhagen area that appeal, or don't appeal, to my discriminating American palate ;)
Wagamama - I have only been to the one in Tivoli and I'm not sure if there are others but not particularly impressed. We love Hercegovinas in Tivoli but in contrast Wagamamas food was nothing special while their prices ANY DAY of the week are high. And for Americans, News Flash - they will charge you for a glass of water. They will not serve free "tap" water like many other restaurants in the area and like all restaurants at home. I know this is not really a big deal but along with the high prices, the tiny tiny little kid's portions, and the not very friendly or accommodating staff, it just puts me off.
Restaurant Long Feng - Christianshavn -It took us a while to try this charming Chinese restaurant in Christianshavn but I'm glad we did. It is right at the Metro Stop - on the second floor above the Vegetable/Fruit Stand. You can take a family of four and even have a beer for under $150. Call ahead and ask to reserve the 6 person corner table, you can watch the square and it has a cool lazy susan that the kids love to use. Its Restaurant Long Feng, Torvegade 50, 32-577452
Shawarma Stand - Christianshavn Metro - For a quick snack, the Shawarma stand at the Christianshavn Metro has a succulent tasty meat sandwich (in a pita) for only 20 DKK along with vegetarian and meat Samosas for only 15 DKK. You can get a larger Shawarma on Durum (tortilla) for 30 DKK. Their chili sauce is to die for.
Hercegovina - Tivoli - Another family friendly restaurant in Downtown Copenhagen (right across from the Copenhagen H train station) is Tivoli's Hercegovina. It is a Croation buffet and it is really good, the food is fresh and tasty. The childrens meals are half price. Go on a weekday because the price goes up on Fri-Sunday. Unfortunately, I believe their only entrance may be through Tivoli so they would be closed for the season right now.
Kartøfler Brød Kiosk - HIDDEN TREASURE Nørreport Metro - If you haven't found it yet and you want an incredible taste treat, go to Nørreport station. There is a Kartoffel Brød (potato bread) stand over by the information booth. It will remind of American fried dough and it is to die for. The most expensive one is 50 DKK and it has a mound of black caviar on it. You won't understand until you try it but these fried breads are hot and delicious.
Smørrebrød Christianshavn - Amazing Price - Delicious - Hidden Treasure - There is a small Smørrebrød restaurant (these are the little delicious Danish sandwiches on the rye bread)in Christianshavn. I have tried other restaurants that feature smørrebrød but they are usually 30-45 DKK for each tiny sandwich and they are not always good. This one is and each little sandwich in the case is ONLY 13 DKK each so you can get 3 for under $6. They ROCK! Never fear if you are not a big fan of these sandwiches they make ALL KINDS OF SANDWICHES to order including bagels with a bunch of toppings including salmon, fried fish sandwiches, and a bunch of others for around 40 DKK. Just be careful if they only have the bagels that look like cheese, last time we got that and it was also jalapeno. My son was not a fan. Don't forget to try the potato salad, it is awesome. It is on Prinsessegade, right around 22. You get off the Christianshavn metro and walk towards the blockbusters (excuse the girl directions but I have no idea what direction that is). Go two blocks and turn left on Prinsessegade, in between the two Møbler (furniture) stores. It will be on your left about half way up the block. Do not miss this restaurant but leave some for me. My favorite is the egg and shrimp or the egg and curried herring. Love it!
The Bagel Co - Hellerup - AWESOME! American bagels, fantastic variety, good prices, very fresh meat and vegetables from pastrami to some beautiful salmon and everything in between. Coffee, fresh-squeezed juices, and warm drinks very reasonably priced. They also have cans of AMERICAN SODA - Dr. Pepper, CHERRY COKE, Root Beer for only 19 DKK a can. Also French's yellow mustard for your sandwich and for sale (cheaper then SuperBest) and last but not least, the only Dill Pickles I have been able to find in Denmark. So let me know if you like it. The staff is awesome but they don't have any tables just two counter and high chairs so go now and tell them I sent you! Strandvejen 149, Hellerup (by Hellerupvej, 7-11 and across from Running Man)
Who knew? One block over and there is a small restaurant called Samos - Copenhagen, right off the Strøget - it is a Greek family style seating restaurant, with great prices and really good food. So if you are just hanging out downtown at lunchtime turn at the little street almost across from the Lego store, go to the end of the block, and make a left. They have a buffet but their a la carte menu is also only 49 DKK a dish and it is good! My picky kid got a plate of french fries and McDonalds at Kongens Nytorv down the road. Samos, Skindergade 29, 1159 København - 33 33 00 25. http://www.samosrestaurant.dk/

ReplyDeleteThe kartoffel Brød stand by the Nørreport train station seems to have disappeared, does anyone know where it went?
